Isabella Benshimol Toro

1994 Caracas, Venezuela. Lives and works in London.
Benshimol’s practice arises from the navigation into the assemblages and nooks within interiority, domestic intimacy and their confluences in everyday life. In her work, she perceives, uses and analyzes the body as an abstract container and reconsiders the permeability and porosity of its corporality as an intrinsic power structure-property. Absorbed by the intimate everyday and the unconscious structures and processes that hold it – she examines, recreates, and edits intimate and mundane gestures, bodily autonomic actions, reactions, and sensations that cohere for their uncontrollable and ephemeral nature. Working mainly with sculpture, Benshimol’s frozen-in-time actions and objects, relics or remains of an absent body live within an awkwardly emulsive and liminal realm; penetrating sensually-but-dissidently pre-established structures and perceptions sitting between the pure and the impure, the dirty and the clean, disgust and pleasure.
